Tempest by Victoria AveyardMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
Aveyard’s official adult debut, her love letter to Pirates of the Caribbean, isn’t getting as much love as her previous books. Hell, the first online response I saw was a Threads post calling this book “shit from a butt.” Well, it’s not my favorite from Aveyard by a long shot, but it’s clearly a labor of love for her.
Set in a fictional Lyrian Sea, the milieu features island colonies of two rival empires (based loosely on England and Spain), plus at least one free republic where the indigenous folks were able to survive the white man’s plagues and flourish. (Curiously, while Aveyard does explore the harm of colonization and genocide, slavery is officially outlawed in this land, not that the elites really care about such things.)
Though the lead characters in this book feel like alternate universe Elizabeth and Will in a lot of ways, they’re also proof of Aveyard’s ability to really turn a romance on its head. The cliffhanger ending solidifies this, and I’m really excited to see where she takes Cat and Valerian in Book 2…
