Review: The Siren

The Siren The Siren by Tomi Adeyemi
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Tomi Adeyemi is back with something completely different: dark academia in a modern setting at Dartmouth University, following a young woman with well buried mental health issues as she gets involved with the most secret of secret sororities, and their supernatural surprises.

Unsurprisingly, a lot of people have thought this was some kind of autobiography, especially with Adeyemi being her own cover model and audiobook narrator this time around. Not to mention her cutting ties with the Children of Blood and Bone film cast and crew, and declaring she would never allow another film adaptation of her work, though that’s a discussion for another day. (FWIW though I will still see CoBaB in theaters.)

But this book, while very beautifully packaged and hauntingly poetic (seriously, Emery’s poems are a highlight)…I really hope Adeyemi doesn’t plan to leave it as just a standalone. Not with that abrupt ending. But if there’s one thing we’ve learned about Adeyemi over the years, my birthday twin (no kidding, she and I were born on the exact same day) got all the Leo energy, and she’ll do whatever the hell she wants. Just like real Siren would.
